Piles, or hemorrhoids, are areas in the anal canal where the tissue, which contains lots of blood vessels, is swollen. They can be internal, occurring inside the anus, or external, when they can be seen and felt outside the anus. When visible, they look like round pink swellings that are the size of a pea or a grape. The Ayurvedic name of piles is Arsh.
Causes
The prime cause of piles is impaired digestion. This occurs due to low digestive fire. Digestive fire helps to digest food. The other causes are excessive intercourse; prolonged sitting on hard seats; excessive squatting; excessive exposure of the anal region to very cold water; suppression of natural urges like flatus, urine and stool; excessive straining during bowel movement; irritable bowel syndrome; chronic constipation; chronic diarrhea; and straining during labour in women. All these cause aggravation of the doshas (vata, pitta and kapha) and lead to piles.
Symptoms Sometimes piles does not show any symptoms. Otherwise its symptoms are bleeding from the anal passage; itchiness around the anal area; pain during and after defecation; redness around the anus; mucus-like discharge from the anus and in feces; irregular defecation; and weakness, headache and anemia due to bleeding during defecation.
Pathology All the three doshas are aggravated due to the reasons discussed above. But the dosha that is primarily involved is apana vata, which is a sub-dosha of vata. These aggravated doshas contaminate the deeper tissues or dhatus like mansa (muscles), meda (fat), rakta (blood), circulate through the important arteries of the body, accumulate in the rectal region, and lead to formation of piles.
